What is eduroam?
eduroam is a secure and automatic WiFi connection service that allows researchers, students, educators and employees of research and education institutions around the world to simply and securely connect to the Internet. eduroam was originally set up for the research and education community by members of the community.
The infrastructure for eduroam access is coordinated by National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in their respective countries (in Luxembourg, Restena Foundation).
An encrypted network
eduroam is an enterprise-grade network, implementing the industry’s highest standards of encryption. The identification of users is fully encrypted between their personal device and their identity provider; passwords are not visible to the hotspot or anyone on the internet. Once connected to an eduroam hotspot, the user’s data is encrypted with a personal key, so that no other hotspot user can get access to the data.
Benefits
Secure Internet access to accompany the users as they move between institutions and countries.
Free service for users
Secure technology preserving user privacy
Transparent Internet connectivity
High-value Wi-Fi solution with low implementation and maintenance costs

Who participates in eduroam?
eduroam is a global initiative of the National Research and Education Networks of more than 100 countries or territories on the planet. It was originally developed as a part of the GÉANT projects, but now has a global governance structure. Since its inception, the service has been co-funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the NRENs.
Participation in eduroam is open to all institutions and entities wishing to offer a secure Wi-Fi solution to students, researchers, educators and employees of research and education institutions. Participation is subject to the eduroam Luxembourg policy (which itself is embedded in the European eduroam service, and the global eduroam compliance statement).
